STUDENT TRIAL EXAM INITIATIVE - AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE

Recently an overall pass rate of 100% (Out of 29 students, all students passed the Student Trial Exam) was reported from the School of Optometry in Pune, India.  The instructors were congratulated by IACLE.  "These results are wonderful. This is one of the highest scores we have recorded from India. You should be very proud," wrote Lakshmi Shinde (Asia Pacific Regional Coordinator).

These supporting thoughts were extracted from the note in reply:

Nagesh Vuppala B.Opt, FIACLE
Sr.Lecturer, School of Optometry, Bharati Vidyapeeth, Pune - INDIA

"There are many reasons for this success; Mainly, we dedicate a good number of hours for CL education both for theory and practical. Our motivation coupled with students hard work gave these wonderful results.

The students and I keep getting support from our Head of the College - Mr.Amod Gogate who is also the Resource Coordinator for IACLE and my co-faculty Mr.Yeshwant Saoji.

IACLE plays a major role for CL education at our institution. Excellent modules, rare and interesting slides and beautifully made CD's help the students understand the concept easily and thoroughly.

Through IACLE STE results, I came to know that our students were getting low scores in ocular response category. We have increased the n number of teaching hours, explained the visuals and took repeated lectures in this subject. This improved the results drastically from 38% to 75% (over a period of 3 years). A part of credit also goes to recently released Module Seven."

This is a prime example of how IACLE members at this school have made use of the IACLE Contact Lens Course Modules, adjusted their teaching curriculum to strengthen an area of identified weakness, and utilized the Student Trial Exam as an excellent tool to improve contact lens education in India.
