IACLE NEWS AND VIEWS - JANUARY 2005 EDITION

IACLE has accomplished a great deal in support of global education with a proven history of affectivity. As we look to a new year, please let us know how best to support your efforts academically. As we begin to map out our plans for 2005 we will focus our attention on educator meetings, industry seminars and provision of resources, among other projects. We look forward to your active participation. IACLE is only as strong as its active membership. We look forward to your continued activity and productivity as we approach a new year.

ACADEMY AWARDS

Congratulations to Brien Holden, who received the first American Academy of Optometry - Essilor Award for Outstanding Contributions to International Optometry. Brien was recognized for raising the profile of international optometry, and for the significant contribution he has made in changing
optometry's role in eye care education and public health.

We also congratulate Debbie Sweeney, IACLE President, who received the Max Shapero Memorial Award from the American Academy of Optometry's Cornea and Contact Lens Section. This award is given to a clinician, researcher, or scholar who has made a significant contribution to the field of cornea and contact lenses through publications, lectures, and research. Debbie is
the first female optometrist, and only the second woman to receive this award. She delivered the lecture titled: "Contacts - On Or In The Cornea?" at the awards ceremony in December 2004.

Both awards were presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Optometry
in Florida (December 2004).

As our hearts and thoughts go out to the victims of the tsunami disaster, and their loved ones, we are happy to report that our IACLE Coordinators in the affected areas all seem to be safe and sound. We have all heard the countless stories of anguish, loss, courage, and compassion. On behalf of the IACLE Executive and Staff we would like to extend our thoughts and support to all those in the affected countries.

IACLE would like to thank the industry sponsors who support global contact lens education
