IACLE conducted Student Trial Exams at China Medical University, Guangzhou Zhongshan University and West China University, Beijing Polytechnical University this month, Still more institutes are showing interest in the STE. The results of STE are a valuable tool for IACLE and educators to identify areas where improvement is needed in their contact lens programs and the areas that they need to focus on with the students before they graduate.

NEW OPTOMETRY PROGRAM
Optometry Programs are developing very quickly in China and contact lens education is one of the most important part of optometry course. For some schools, a shortage of qualified contact lens teachers is still the problem.
IACLE has conducted four Intensive Educators Training Programs during past years. Educators and industry representatives who attended the meetings have improved their knowledge in the area of contact lenses. We still hope to have more educators for which to provide this training. ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP FEES
We are happy to remind you that all 2005 annual membership fees are due by 1 August. Members who have not paid their annual fees for the past two years will be moved to non-member status in August if they do not pay or make special arrangements with us by that time. Once moved to non-member status, they will need to reapply should they wish to continue their membership with IACLE in future. In accordance with our active membership policy, IACLE resources and programs are only available to members if their membership status is current. Please make sure that you finish your Annual Membership fee on time. The 5 th international Congress of Ophthalmology and Optometry China meeting was held in China, Shanghai on April 8 th to 10th. About 1,000 attendees from all over the country came to the meeting. Speakers from china, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, India, Korea, USA introduced recent developments from ophthalmology and optometry. About 100 industry took part in the exhibitors. IACLE National Coordinator, Qu Xiaomei, on behalf of IACLE, gave the lecture on IACLE activities in China during the meeting (see attached photo). Industry people from J&J, Menicon, Frenshcon et al attended the meeting and gave the lectures.

Over the past several years IACLE has held three intensive educator training programs in China. A fourth program has been tentatively scheduled for May 10-14, 2004 in Shanghai. The five-day program will include both lectures and hands-on workshops and will cover topics relating to Soft and RGP contact lens fitting.
