An Advanced CE program, sponsored by a special educational grant from Bausch & Lomb, was held in India at the Elite School of Optometry, Chennai on 25-26 June, providing 18 hours of education to 28 participants.
The program included lectures, w orkshops and video presentations covering SCL fitting, Toric SCL Fitting, Care and Maintenance, Complications, Wear Modality and Lens Replacement, CL options for Presbyopia and for Continuous Wear, as well as Practice Management and Communication. 2-3 June, 23-24 June 2005
IACLE Educators Meetings were held in Colombia on 2-3 June, and Mexico on 23-24 June reaching 60 educators. The programs included Anatomy and Physiology, Slit Lamp Illumination Techniques, Corneal Oxygenation and CL, Complications during CL Wear, and a Leadership Workshop. Meeting attendees shared information about their schools and CL curricula, and reported on the usefulness of the IACLE CL Course for their teaching and lecture development.
Comments received from meeting attendees:
- ‘The most significant issue to learn was the different teaching techniques, in topics really hard to teach in an easy, friendly and simple, but effective way.’
- ‘The lecture on complications was excellent. The standardization of concepts and how to teach the different complications that can arise with the use of CLs was an excellent exercise for all.’
- ‘ The interaction between different schools was good for our profession. The exchange of ideas and the interaction of the meeting were quite important. This type of meeting motivates educators to improve our teaching and knowledge.’
- ‘The impact of IACLE in Latin America is amazing; the mission of educating educators, fantastic. It was a privilege to have such a prestigious organization conducting this meeting.’
The Latin America Regional Coordinator, Percy Lazon, also visited several schools in both Colombia and Mexico. The Instituto Politécnico Nacional (Mexico) is in the process of updating their Optometry Program and estimates that 90% of their course modifications will be based on the IACLE CL Course. Once the new program is implemented, and with educators also promoting the IACLE CL Course to their students as a textbook, IACLE would be able to measure the impact of these changes through the STE.
2-5 June 2005
Two IACLE members from Europe, Wim Borst (Netherlands) and Javier Gonzalez-Perez (Spain), were invited to attend this year's Association of Optometric Contact Lens Educators (AOCLE) Annual Workshop that was held in Michigan College of Optometry from 2-5 June.
Javier reported attending a lecture on 'Promoting Deep Learning in College Students', and stressed the lecturer's point of view regarding the need to improve teaching methods with the objective to increase students' learning and knowledge retention.
One of the most important highlights from the AOCLE workshop was reported to be the experience of seeing what happens when a group [such as AOCLE] works as a family; how the results are obviously better; seeing the high teaching quality and research; as well as these being more easily attainable through working together as an Association. IACLE would like to express appreciation to AOCLE and is proud to continue our collaboration in furthering contact lens education.

Letter received from IACLE India Member, Pravin Tellakula, following the meeting:
“IACLE members meet was excellent. The topics covered were very useful and informative. It was also presented very well by the speakers and lot of interaction and participation was present.
The discussions helped in exchanging views and learning a lot of new things - e.g., 'parking the lens' was news to me. Probably if it works well I would like to treat presbyopia with near and distance Rx being switched in the eye - park one and use one!
The talk on Communication Skills was also very good. Amod's excellent efforts in organising the place and his hospitality needs to be recognised. I enjoyed being at BVP. Looking forward to the next meeting “
Two school visits, i.e. to Bharati Vidyapeeth & Jnana Probhodhini Medical Trust were also conducted.
