IACLE WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS


India: Nirav Mehta (Hari Jyot College of Optometry), Kunal Kishor (Laxmi School of Optometry, Debarum Dutta (L.V Prasad Eye Institute) and Tamal Chakraborty (L.V Prasad Eye Institute).

Australia: Michael Peter Michael (Michael Michael Optometrist).

ACCREDITATION EXAM 2009 REGIONAL UPDATE

China: 33 candidates registered, 30 candidates wrote the exam and 20 candidates became eligible to apply for FIACLE status.
Korea: 21 candidates registered, 16 candidates wrote the exam and 6 candidates became eligible to apply for FIACLE status.
Remaining Asia Pacific: 131 candidates registered, 106 candidates wrote the exam and 49 candidates became eligible to apply for FIACLE status.
Eligible FIACLEs have been asked to familiarize themselves with the requirements to apply for the Fellow of IACLE status and we are currently processing application forms.   Further information about the requirements to apply for the Fellow of IACLE status can be found here on our website: http://www.iacle.org/cms/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=64&Itemid=72


DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAM (DLP)

We welcome all new members and existing members to the program for 2010.
We are currently processing assignments and issuing grades.  We remind all participants to submit outstanding assignments.
Out of the number of candidates who wrote last year’s Accreditation Exam and became eligible to apply for FIACLE status (111 candidates in total) 33% were registered in the DLP and an extra 5% were candidates who had completed the DLP in previous years.  Therefore 39% were DLP participants.


STUDENT TRIAL EXAM (STE)


We are now processing 2010 registration forms for the Student Trial Exam (STE).  If you are interested in making use of this valuable diagnostic tool at your institution, please submit your registration to your regional/national IACLE office.

China began the year with STE’s held at Nan Jing College of Chemical Technology and Anhui Medical College in January.
India conducted a STE at Lotus Bausch & Lomb Institute of Optometry in February.


INSTITUTIONAL VISITS

Korean National Coordinator, Dongpil Kim, visited Shinsung College in Dangjin, Chungnam and met with Prof. Dongkyu Ryu  (Head of Department of Optometry) to discuss how IACLE can collaborate with the department.  He explained our programs and resource materials and how these can help construct and maintain the CL curriculum.


MEETINGS:

The national health personnel licensing examination board in Korea held an optician licensing examination on 7th February.

FUTURE CONFERENCES:


The 10th International Congress of Ophthalmology and Optometry China will be held on 9-10 April.

The 7th Asia Cornea and Contact Lens Conference  was  held on 3-5 March at the Shangra-La Boracay Resort, Philippines.  The topics of discussion will be corneal health, corneal therapy and myopia control.  For more information visit the website: www.acclc.org

The 3rd Asean Optometric Conference is being held on 7-8 March at the Royale Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  This conference will provide updated information on myopia control, new spectacle and contact lens designs, specialty spectacles and contact lenses, basic and advanced ortho-k including wet lab sessions and certification, and how to do co-management and supercharge your practice. The 25th Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Congress (APAO) in combination with the 15th National Congress of the Chinese Ophthalmological Society (COS) will be held 16-20 September.

Developing Antimicrobial Surfaces for Silicone Hydrogels
During the past few decades, advances in contact lens and lens care technologies have further contributed to the safety and efficacy of contact lens wear, making contact lenses an option for more patients than ever before.  In fact, it is estimated that there are now over 110 million contact lens wearers worldwide.  However, despite the improved oxygen transmissibility of silicone hydrogel lenses and the effectiveness of new lens care solutions, some patients still experience microbial contamination of their contact lenses.
